چکیده

We provide a multi-factor real option model for a single harvest and then for perpetual forest harvesting, which extends the Faustmann (1849) approach to infinite rotations with multi-factor uncertainty. We examine separately forest growth and timber prices (and eventually credits/penalties for CO2 uptake/release upon harvest), so the forester can focus on critical exogenous and partially endogenous factors. While the single harvest option and its value at optimal harvest time are expressible as products of the timber price and forest size, the replanting option is not, so the principle of similarity sometimes used to reduce the dimensions of two factor models does not apply. We provide a unique quasianalytical solution for multi-factor uncertainty in forestry to determine the multiple rotation value and optimal harvest size.

Sustainable forestry in the tropics: panacea or folly?

12 The profitability of uncontrolled logging can be a significant obstacle to sustainable forest 13 management, especially in the tropics. Rice et al. (1997) have argued that not only does 14 traditional selective logging provide higher returns but also incurs less damage to forests than 15 sustainable forest management systems that involve harvesting of many species and the creation 16 of larg...

Sustainable stemwood yield in relation to the nitrogen balance of forest plantations: a model analysis.

We used an existing analytical model of stemwood growth in relation to nitrogen supply, which we describe in an accompanying paper, to examine the long-term effects of harvesting and fire on tree growth. Our analysis takes into account the balance between nitrogen additions from deposition, fixation, and fertilizer applications, and nitrogen losses from stemwood harvesting, regeneration burning...

Commercial harvests of edible mushrooms from the forests 4 of the Pacific Northwest United States : issues , management , 5 and monitoring for sustainability

9 10 Abstract 11 12 Widespread commercial harvesting of wild edible mushrooms from the forests of the Pacific Northwest United States 13 (PNW-US) began 10–15 years ago. A large proportion of suitable forest habitat in this region is managed by the Forest Service 14 (US Department of Agriculture) and Bureau of Land Management (US Department of the Interior). These lands are managed 15 under an e...

Real options in harvesting decisions on publicly owned forest lands (Revised)

This paper develops a two factor real options model of the harvesting decision over infinite rotations with mean reverting stochastic prices using a rigorous HamiltonJacobi-Bellman methodology. The harvesting problem is formulated as a Linear Complementarity Problem which is solved numerically using a fully implicit finite difference method. This approach is contrasted with Markov Decision Proc...
